Archaeology Training Opportunities

Are you ready for an exciting season of hands-on learning? Join us for six engaging 1½-hour training modules led by the experienced field archaeologist and HRGS member, Dan Britton, who will be running sessions from April to October 2026. Each session is designed for anyone looking to deepen their archaeological knowledge and practical skills, all directly linked to our upcoming fieldwork at Boyces Hill.

You can attend for just £10 per session, or get the full experience for £50 for all six. Spaces are limited to 20 participants, so early booking is essential! For those eager to get even more involved, there’ll be optional finds processing sessions in the afternoons following each module. All proceeds will go to help support our excavations and research.

Our sessions will take place mostly on the last Sunday of each month, starting in April:

  • April 26th – General Historic Overview of Archaeology. Following in the footsteps of plunderers and antiquarians. How we got to where we are now and what we can contribute to Kentish archaeology.
  • May 31st – Site Formation Processes and broad stroke typologies of archaeological features: How sites are formed and what that can tell us about expected archaeological deposits and what we might expect to find beneath the turf.
  • June 28th – Excavation Methodologies: The hows and whys of field excavation. Preservation of information and context. From swinging mattocks to scientific sampling, it’s easier than you think.
  • July 26th – Hand Planning and Section Drawing, practical applications, tricks and tips combined with practice sessions for drawing and the use of dumpy levels in site survey work.
  • September 6th (please note change of date) – Recording and Paperwork, the benefits of a consistent, well thought out recording system begins in the trench but will also do you plenty of favours once the digging is done and the report writing begins. An introduction to archaeological documentation and making your archaeological life easier.
  • September 27th – Harris Matrix Recording. Taking your sections, plans and recording sheets and turning them into a proven stratigraphic history, that tells the story of past human activity as found at the end of your trowel.

Come curious, leave inspired, and ready to bring your new skills to life at Boyces Hill.
