Avenue of Remembrance

In collaboration with Swale Borough Council, the Historical Research Group (HRGS) has created these web pages to commemorate the centenary of the Avenue of Remembrance in 2023.

The Avenue of Remembrance created in 1923 commemorates 182 Sittingbourne men who gave their lives in World War One, each with a plaque and a tree.

In 1992 plaques and trees were installed in Central Avenue to commemorate those lost in World War Two.

The links above are to the history of the Avenues and indexes of the names for WW1 and WW2 who are commemorated. These indexes provide links to each individual’s story.

For more information visit our Heritage Hub in the The Forum, High Street, Sittingbourne.

The Heritage Hub also features an inter-active display with stories of each of the 4,500 plus individuals of Swale who gave their lives in World War One, World War Two, Korean War, Northern Ireland Conflict and Afghanistan.
