Richard & Theresa Emmett and Jerry Cooley were delighted to be selected to be part of the Canterbury Diocese contingent to attend a peace event ‘Faites la Paix’ held in Arras, France. We travelled over to Arras on Wednesday the 18th April, and whilst there managed to visit The Somme battlefield area, a cemetery at Pozieres, the Lochnegar crater, the Glory Hole Crater at La Boisselle and visited the Thiepval Memorial, which commemorates over 72,000 missing men who died in that area during the First World War. The itinerary on the Thursday included visits to various nationality cemeteries and memorials. This enabled us to collect photographs of some of our local men to add to our touch screen and exhibition in the Forum.
The trip was extremely moving and worthwhile at the same time…we remembered many of our local fallen whilst at the same time contributing to the aspiration of the desire for peace. One can but reflect when surveying the thousands upon thousands of headstones, representing the fallen from all sides from WW1, and the enormous loss of life and sorrow we know it brought about…that this alone should implore all of us to seek to find a better way of resolving national disputes, without resulting to hostilities.
