Old Maps is a good place to start if you are looking for a place that doesn't appear to exist anymore. Place names alter over time and small villages get incorporated into nearby sprawling towns.
The other thing to bear in mind is that the spelling could be wrong ... and I don't just mean slightly misspelt! I'm still trying to track down a place in Yorkshire that looks as though it's called Bristok on an ancestor's marriage certificate! If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear from them!  Local knowledge is an amazing tool - especially when an area's accent is taken into account.

You can find Ordnance Survey Maps in your local archive. Sittingbourne Library has a collection that covers the local area, as does our Research Room.

We've started to collate a list of street and place names and how they've evolved here.  It is far from complete but may be a good place to start.

Here we'd like to list as many as possible of the maps that are available of the local area and the dates they were created. Even if we can't bring the maps themselves to you, hopefully we can tell you where you'll be able to view them.
